The quarries are located deep within the mountains, and it is said that a Marmorata VILLAGE marble needs to be mined for nine generations before it can be used for anything other than ornamentation. The production of this marbles starts with the extraction of the basalt stones from deep within the earth. These stones are then taken to the mills where they are ground into a very fine powder. Next, water is added and mixed with the powder until it becomes a slurry. This mixture is then poured into large molds called ‘chiocciu’. The chisels used to create these marbles are so sharp that they can cut through human skin! Once these chisels have been shaped, they are painted black and then polished until they shine like mirrors. Finally, small crystals of quartz are added to give the marbles their characteristic rainbow colors.
